Teen Self-Esteem & Body Image Support Group
- Body checking in the “skinny” mirror?
- Comparing yourself to others?
- Do you judge yourself and others based on weight, shape and size?
- Tired of listening to body shaming at the lunch table?
Body image is the cognitive thought and emotion you have about your own body. Teens with poor body image have negative and critical thoughts that lead to feelings of low self-esteem. These concerns begin at a young age with pressure and comparisons to be like someone else who you may think is prettier, smarter, funnier, skinnier…
How girls feel about themselves and their bodies today is terribly complicated and conflicting. Our society is absorbed with unrealistic messages that are hypocritical and confusing about the appearance ideal perpetuated by the media. You can read an article in a magazine or on social media about increasing your self-esteem and then on the very next page find advertisements for “fixing” your body with diet-aids and so on
This engaging 10-week group will help teens understand and overcome body-image discomfort and related distortions in order to gain awareness and self-confidence to propel their lives forward.
Each 75-minute weekly group is focused on therapeutic discussions and practical exercises that address the most common circumstances associated with low self-esteem and poor body-image including: comparison, social and family pressure, perfectionism, negative self-talk, unrealistic media and social media images, fear of disappointing and unhealthy friendships.
This group will empower teen girls to overcome body image concerns, gain self-confidence and give voice to what has seemed unspeakable.
